Bequia woman wins by-election in Canada

(SOURCE: NBC Radio): A woman who grew up on the Grenadine Island of Bequia and has a Vincentian father has won a provincial by-election in Canada.

According to the National Broadcasting Corporation of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Mrs. Andrea Chambers-Hazell, a Canadian who grew up in St. Vincent and the Grenadines has won the Scarborough-Guildwood Provincial by-election in Canada.

She will now serve on the Legislative Assembly of Ontario to represent the Scarborough Guildwood riding.

She represents the Liberal Party.

The elections were held on Thursday, July 27, 2023.

Ties to St. Vincent and the Grenadines

In an interview on Saturday (July 29) with NBC, Mrs. Hazell shared that she was born in Jamaica and moved with her parents and other relatives to Bequia, St. Vincent at the age of three where she spent much of her early life.

Mrs. Hazell told NBC, “the reason I entered political life was fueled by a deep-rooted desire to make a meaningful difference in the lives of the people I serve. Throughout my journey as a businesswoman and community leader, I witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by our residents, particularly those who were marginalized, underserved, and in need of a stronger voice.”

“In my heart, I carry the aspirations and dreams of our diverse Scarborough community, and I am committed to working tirelessly to close the gaps. From empowering small businesses and supporting women and newcomers to championing affordable housing and quality healthcare, I am steadfast in my dedication to creating a more equitable and inclusive society,” she said.

“My entry into political life is not merely about holding a position; it is about embracing the responsibility to uplift the voices of the people I represent and be a catalyst for positive change. Together, with the support and collaboration of our community, we can forge a brighter future for Scarborough-Guildwood, where everyone has the opportunity to thrive and prosper,” she told NBC Radio St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

“Aside from fighting the conservative government’s plan to privatize healthcare, she intends to reintroduce rent control so that life becomes more affordable and to improve childcare and public education for our children. She plans to protect the environment and the Greenbelt as representative for Scarborough-Guildwood,” she said.

She also spoke about what she thinks the win means for Caribbean Canadians.

“My recent victory in the Scarborough-Guildwood by-election is a remarkable achievement and a moment of pride for Caribbean Canadians. In my new role in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario, my commitment to serving my community will not waver. Caribbean Canadians will undoubtedly benefit from my strong voice and dedication to advocating for our needs. It is my hope that more Caribbean Canadians will become involved in political activities,” she said.
