History was created on June 27, 2023, when the Canouan Secondary School held its first-ever graduation ceremony.
Today, September 28, 2023, the Ministry of Education released the official Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate – CSEC results for 2023 showing that the school has attained an overall pass rate of 89.86 across various subjects.
The school, with a small number of candidates at this year’s sitting of CSEC found itself in the top 5 performing schools across the country.
The Ministry said this year’s overall results were delayed to to some issues with the Caribbean Examination Council – CXC.
Individual students across St. Vincent and the Grenadines, however, were able to access their results in August.
Nine (9) students including four males and five females made history by becoming the first batch of students to graduate from the school which opened its doors on Canouan in September 2019.
For years, some residents of Canouan were petitioning the government to build a secondary school on the southern Grenadine island.
One of the concerns expressed by parents was that in the absence of a secondary school, students had no choice but to travel a few miles by sea over to Union Island or to mainland, St. Vincent to access secondary education.
Due to a small resident student population, the proposal to build a secondary school and outfit it with permanent staff to deliver instruction in a number of subject areas was thought to be infeasible.
But after much pressure and support from partners, the government moved, in 2019, to provide a space to accommodate secondary school education on the island.
