National swimmer and national scholar – Mr. Shane Cadougan has been appointed a Sporting Ambassador for St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves made the announcement during his National Independence Day address today (October 27) during the Military Parade at Victoria Park.
The Prime Minister also announced the appointment of two additional Cultural Ambassadors – Ms. Lornette ‘Fya Empress’ Nedd, the reigning Calypso Monarch, and Mr. Phillip ‘Wetty Beatz’ Bastien – a renowned Vincentian music producer and artiste based in Europe.
Mr. Cadougan, 23, is the youngest person to have been appointed a Sporting Ambassador in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
He specializes in the 50-metre freestyle and represented St. Vincent and the Grenadines at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. He has also also represented the country in a number of local, regional, and extra-regional competitions.
During the announcement today, Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves said Mr. Cadougan has been doing amazing work in his non-governmental organisation in assisting and mentoring young persons in their athletic and educational pursuits.
Mr. Cadougan is the founder of Athletes In Action, a non-profit organisation dedicated to empowering young athletes in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
His organisation recently partnered with Venture Sports USA to help student-athletes “reach their full potential and secure athletic scholarships in the United States,” a press release from Athletes In Action stated.
The prime minister also announced fifteen other initiatives of real immediacy, most of which will take effect from January 2024. They include a reduction in the income tax threshold, crime-fighting programmes, an extension of youth employment programs, and increased income for nurses.
