Demetri Carrington was playing dominoes at a shop in Top Roseau on Sunday, October 29, 2023, when he saw a huge and unusual traffic build-up in the area.
“I saw the traffic jam going down Roseau, and I heard somebody say a van turned over. So, I started telling drivers not to go down because a van turned over.
He said he received a phone call later that evening: “It was my girlfriend and my baby got knocked down,” he told One News SVG on Wednesday night (November 1).
Mr. Carrington said he had to rush to the hospital.
Earlier that evening, he and his girlfriend – Andra Harry had just returned from the countryside, he told One News SVG.
“I sleep by her sometimes, but I live higher up the road – Top Roseau, and she lives at Bottom Roseau.
“We both went country, came back, stopped by Sion Hill Bus Stop, walked around, and went down to Roseau. So I stayed off at home at Top Roseau while she walked down with the baby to Bottom Roseau”.
He said: “I didn’t hear about it until I reached up the road where I normally lime (hang out) and play domino. When I reached up there, that is when I got a phone call. That’s how I found out. I had to the hospital.”
He said the accident set back his family.
“It set us back a lot because it’s both feet broke, one has in steel, the other one has a cast right up above the knee, right up to her thigh,” he said, referring to his girlfriend who is currently hospitalized.
“Face bruise up, face swollen, her eyes are swollen,” he said, referring to his girlfriend.
“The baby’s hand broke,” he said, adding that his girlfriend’s sister has had to stay at home from work to take care of the baby since the baby has been discharged from the hospital.
The baby’s name is Alejandro Harry.
“She (the baby’s aunt) can’t breastfeed the baby, the baby was hardly drinking milk. It’s hard on us”.
He said that according to the doctors, his girlfriend would be in the hospital for a while.
Carrington said it is currently a very rough time and a setback for the family since he and his girlfriend are both musicians, and they have three children.
He said the family needs assistance.
“She’s in the hospital. She needs things; we need assistance because we have two young boys attending Sion Hill Government School. One is eight years old in Grade 4 and the other is six years old and is in Grade 1,” he said.
He said he is at the hospital on a daily basis helping out his girlfriend who is currently immobile.
“I does have to be down there with her to help her out because she can’t move. She’s on the bed and she can’t move to do anything for herself. So, I have to be there to help her out,” the father of three said.
Mr. Carrington said that anyone wishing to reach out to him or the family can contact 1 784 491-0166.
According to a release from the Royal St. Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force, the Traffic Department is investigating the accident.
According to that report issued on October 30, the driver of the vehicle sustained serious injuries and was also hospitalized.
“The motor vehicle sustained moderate to extensive damage. Investigations are ongoing,” that report stated.
