Union Island Secondary wins Ideas Category of 2023 NTRC iCode784 competition

The Union Island Secondary School has won the award for presenting the best idea for the development of a mobile application at the 2023 National Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (NTRC) iCode Competition.

This is the second time the school has won the ideas category of the technology competition.

The official results were released today (November 16) via a press release, but the 2023 Icode784 Competition’s Grand Finale and Prize Giving Ceremony took place at the Kingstown Baptist church on November 15, 2023.

Students of the Union Island Secondary School – Akeilah Ashton and Derissa James collected the award on behalf of their school’s team for their idea (Vincy Twang).

The name of their team is UISS A Team 3.0.

Their app development idea – Vincy Twang is to translate Vincentian creole into Standard English.

The second consecutive win for Union Island Secondary comes after the NTRC began hosting its iCode784 summer programme on the Southern Grenadine Island.

The St. Vincent Grammar School took second and third spots in the Secondary Schools Ideas category. Kendal Sampson and Ryan Charles Fernandez collected the second place award on beheld of one of their school’s teams for their idea – Eco Tour SVG.

Their team is Young Minds.

Rian Veira and Jediah Seymour of the St. Vincent Grammar School collected the third place award in the Secondary Schools Ideas category with their team – AniTrack.

The other two categories were the Open Category which was open to persons under the age of 35 and the Secondary Schools App category.

School with the most entries in the competition: St. Vincent Grammar School, the press release from the NTRC stated.

Two members of the winning team E-TECH of the Open category will be travelling to Barcelona, Spain in March 2024 to attend an event for startups hosted by GSMA called 4YFN (4 Years From Now), the press release from the NTRC stated.
