Bequia is a paradise for locals and tourists.
The idyllic beaches, sceneries, and places of accommodation on the Island of Clouds can be widely accessed, but access to a major part of the island is being compromised.
The area in question is the main road in Bluff Bay, La Pompe where part of the main road is caving in and can fall over a precipice into the sea.
The road is the one throughway that connects Paget Farm, the JF Mitchell Airport, and a major resort to the rest of the island.
Deputy Director of Grenadines Affairs – Mr. Carlos Williams told One News SVG recently that the failure of the road at Bluff is as a result of multiple factors including poor construction, including foundation, the weight of vehicles and heavy equipment, and machinery, poor compaction, and other issues when the wall was built long ago.
The government has been trying to come up with ways to address the issue since 2015, due to the precarious nature of the terrain, but now, a solution has been found.
Work will begin on Monday, November 27, 2023 on the construction of a wall to remedy the failure of the road at Bluff Bay in La Pompe, Bequia.
The construction of the wall by the government is Part One of the Bluff Bay Rehabilitation Project.
The next part of the project will be to realign the entire section of the road.
Deputy Director of Grenadines Affairs – Mr. Carlos Williams told One News SVG that plans for the realignment of the road are well advanced.
In the meantime, the construction of the 150-foot wall is necessary to ensure the road is safe.
He said: “It’s absolutely necessary. It must be done”.
The Bluff Project been around since 2015. This deteriorated state of the road has been recorded since the last 2-3 years, he said.
Currently, part of the road contracts into a single lane because of a hole in the area.
The dugout seen today came about a few weeks ago as engineers were examining the foundation of the wall built long ago, Mr. Williams said.
Mr. Carlos Williams said If the project is not done it can mean a cut-off of the village of Paget Farm from Port Elizabeth.
He said the wall is absolutely necessary to maintain connectivity and promote safety while the government finalizes the plans for the realignment of the road.
