Richmond Vale offers 15 Scholarships to Vincentians, application period open

As this country continues to battle the effects of climate change, one school is offering the opportunity for Vincentians to learn how to adapt and mitigate climate change impacts.

The Richmond Vale Academy based in North Leeward is offering scholarships for Vincentian students to be able to pursue a 6-month course in Climate Action.

The course has three start dates, but the next one starts in February 2024. Registration for the February 2024 intake is expected to close on December 22, 2023.

The scholarship covers meals, lodging, and other expenses associated with studies.

According to information from the Academy, interested applicants must be 18 years and older and be willing to live at the Academy for six months.

The course touches on areas such as research, community outreach, and practical application.

Students will acquire skills in advocacy communication, climate change action, research, sustainable agriculture, and project management, among others.

During the first month, students will apply themselves to theoretical knowledge on global warming, climate, change, sustainable agriculture, pollution, the oceans, Small Islands Developing States, the Caribbean, and what we can do together to adapt to the changing climate in St. Vincent. They will also conduct field research to explore how climate change has affected St. Vincent, how it will do so in the future, and what we can do together to prepare for what’s coming. In this. Students will build the foundation for the projects they will carry out in the next five months of the program.

During the second month, students and their teams will implement projects to make Richmond Vale Academy into a model farm and a model school for St. Vincent. Students and their team also map out how they will contribute to making St. Vincent and the Grenadines into more climate-compliant nation.

During the third and fourth months of the program, students will conduct workshops and create Ecological Home Gardens with families. They will teach in primary and secondary schools, community centers, and businesses, and use social media, radio, TV, and others to bring out the message.

During during the fifth and sixth months of the programme students who would then be climate activists will produce and distribute a climate compliance newsletter, carry out a big tree planting action with mangroves and other trees, mobilize many people to join the action, and end up with a great Open Day with a barbecue. Finally, they will evaluate, conduct, and hand over the experiences to the next team.
