His Right Excellent Joseph Chatoyer – Paramount Chief is currently the lone national hero of St. Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) and a celebrated icon in the Garifuna world.

Garifuna is a hybrid race that was created when Amerindians in Yurumei (St. Vincent) known as Caribs, interbred with Africans.

Through the resistance he led in St. Vincent and the Grenadines against the British, St. Vincent had the shortest period of slavery in the Caribbean.

St. Vincent was also one of the few places in the Caribbean where the British signed a peace accord with native people.

The resistance was eventually defeated when Chatoyer was ambushed and killed by the British in 1795, after which thousands of Garifuna were exiled to Baliceaux, then to Rotaan, then to British Honduras (Belize), and other Central American countries. They eventually spread to North America Ans other parts of the world where they have managed to preserve their Garifuna culture.

The event will also honour African American Hero – Harriet Tubman who freed many slaves particularly those who escaped from the southern parts of America.

The History Channel says: “Harriet Tubman was an escaped enslaved woman who became a “conductor” on the Underground Railroad, leading enslaved people to freedom before the Civil War, all while carrying a bounty on her head. But she was also a nurse, a Union spy and a women’s suffrage supporter. Tubman is one of the most recognized icons in American history and her legacy has inspired countless people from every race and background.”

“Esteemed figures such as California State Commissioner Andre Parvenu, CEO of One News SVG, Demion McTair, Blair Hayse’s Girl on Fire Magazine, and the Rev. Camille Bennett, founder of “Project Say Something,” stand united as prominent supporters of this distinguished event,” the press release stated.
