Drake Baptiste, a Vincentian, and Shondira Wilson, an American, met at a restaurant in St. Kitts and Nevis about five years ago with a simple “hello”.
Today, that fateful moment has blossomed into a serious relationship that has been strengthened by a life-changing event.
On October 7, 2023, Mr. Baptiste who at the time worked in sales, was involved in a terrible car accident that affected his brain, his hands, his organs, and his legs.

At one point, it was not clear if he would ever be able to walk again. Hearing this news, Shondria, his girlfriend only had thoughts of being there for him, she told One News SVG.
Mr. Baptiste said Shondria’s support “was more than a mother’s love before, during, and after the accident”.
Today, Mr. Baptiste can walk again and he has proposed to Shondria who has agreed to be his wife soon.
Here is their love story.
How did you meet?
We met around 5 years ago and made it official in June 2022. We met in Nevis where I was residing at the time and where Shondria was on vacation, the couple said.
“We met at a restaurant; I said hello first, and she responded positively. She was with a friend and her sister the day we met. We started a conversation and everything went forward smoothly. That conversation led to her to return to Nevis,” Mr. Baptiste said.

Shondria, what was your response to the accident?
“Once I first heard about the accident someone came and got me to let me know that there was an accident. At first, I thought it was a joke or something, so I didn’t know if to take it seriously, but once I got there and saw him, I knew how serious the accident was
At that point, I didn’t know what I was thinking in my mind at that time. I was just in go mode. I just wanted to make sure that I was there for him. I wanted to make sure he was okay. I wanted him to know that I was there. I just wanted him to know that someone who loved him was right there with him through it all.

Once we got to the hospital I wasn’t able to see him for a few hours, but at that time I just made sure that I prayed for him. I prayed over the doctors to make sure that they were doing what they needed to do to make sure that he was good in the long run, and I just knew no matter what, I knew he would be by my side if it was me, so I knew that I had to be there for him no matter what. And that’s how I felt at the beginning and the end.
Now that he is getting better, I’m just grateful and happy and thankful to God that he is doing such an amazing job. He is getting better. Two months ago, he used to complain to me all the time about being in that bed and not being able to walk and help, and now he’s walking around, he’s out of the wheelchair. He doesn’t have to be in the bed. He’s doing physical therapy. He could use his hand and it’s just amazing to see what a difference it was from even just last month to this month, and I’m just happy that I’m here to witness it all, to be here with him.”
Shondria is pregnant with Drake’s child. The child is expected in March 2024.
