Trini Doubles, a small and growing business that brings Trinidadian cuisine to St. Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) is so far employing seven (7) people.

Some of the people are employed at the Indian Bay location while the others operate from the Kingstown location.

The business mainly supplies Doubles.

According to redonline.co.uk, Doubles is a delicious street food snack from Trinidad and Tobago, consisting of barra (fried flatbreads) and channa (a spicy chickpea curry).

The business which is operated from stalls at Indian Bay and Heritage Square, Kingstown has also added Aloo Pie to its offerings.

Operating for just over a year, the business was started by Trinidadian – Justin Insanali, 43, whose mother resides in St. Vincent.

In an interview with One News SVG’s Havlyn Gill today (February 5), Mr. Insanali explained why he decided to open the business. He said: “Since I lived in St. Vincent in the 1990s, I always had a love for St. Vincent. Even when I went back to Trinidad, I always wanted to come back”.

“My mom has been living here for a while now, so I saw the opportunity to kill two birds with one stone to come up and open a business and be able to spend some time with my mom, help out my mom, that kind of thing,” he added.

“We started small and now it has evolved to a point where we have two spots now, one in Indian Bay and one in Heritage Square, Kingstown,” he said.

He said he plans to expand the business.

“There are several dishes that people would sell alongside the doubles, so we plan on bringing everything,” he said.

Mr. Insanali also answered the question: “What makes a good Doubles?”

He said: “Your Channa has to have a certain texture, a certain taste. Your Barra which is the dough, the skin, it’s like a fried flatbread, that has to be soft and of a certain taste as well”.

He uses a number of homemade sauces to go with the Doubles including Tamarind, Pepper, Chaddon Beni, and other sauces which he says are freshly made every day.

Mr. Insanali is not the only supplier of Doubles in SVG, but his entrepreneurial venture has been capturing the attention of many Vincentians.

For decades, there has been synergy between St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Trinidad and Tobago enhanced by family ties, trade, history, and geography.
