Vincentian Moranie Porter received the Top Academic Student award in the Imjin Troop, 55 Training Squadron, Military Engineering Combat 2 Course at a British Army institution.

Mr. Porter who is originally from the rural North Leeward community of Spring Village received the award from the 3 Royal School of Military Engineering (RSME) Regiment of the British Army on February 2, 2024.

The 3 RSME Regiment says on its website that its mission is to deliver well-trained and motivated Military Engineers in order to meet the operational requirements of Defence.

The 3 RSME Regiment says it comprises two training squadrons, 55 and 57.

Active since 1970, the 3 RSME Regiment says it delivers initial Royal Engineer training to all Sapper officers and soldiers.

“Soldiers from the Field Army also train here; all levels of Command Leadership and Management are taught along with Combat Engineering at all levels, with the intent of meeting the requirements of Defence,” the UK-based military training organization says on its website.

In brief communication with One News SVG on February 6, Mr. Porter who attended the Central Leeward Secondary School said he is proud of the achievement.

“It has always been my hope to one day become a member of the armed forces, gaining a sense of purpose as a result of being a part of something that is larger than yourself and having the feeling that you are making a positive contribution to something,” he said.

He also shared brief words of encouragement with the youth.

“To youths, I cannot stress enough that “your mindset is everything.” Despite the fact that there will always be obstacles, you must maintain a good attitude and look for solutions to overcome them,” he said.

“Being in the military is a life that is packed with excitement, discipline, and perseverance. Serving in the military is a great way to acquire a wide range of skills, including those related to teamwork and communication, as well as technical and analytical abilities. Irrespective of the military occupation you select, you acquire numerous essential skills,” he added.

Many Vincentians are currently employed in the UK Military, and many of them are receiving training.
