A student of the Division of Arts, Sciences and General Studies (DASGS) of the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Community College has been chosen to be the Resident British Commissioner on International Women’s Day (March 8, 2024).
The British High Commission made the announcement today (March 5) in a press release.
The winner of the contest held by the British High Commission to choose a young female to be Resident British Commissioner for a Day is Miss Alysha Cornwall, the High Commission said in the release.
“Miss Cornwall who hails from Carapan Village, Stubbs is currently a second year student at the SVGCC Division of Arts, Science and General Studies,” the release said.
“After submitting a video detailing her thoughts about Violence against Women in SVG and how she thought that we as a country can reduce the incidence of Violence against Woman in SVG, Miss Alysha Cornwall was selected as the top entrant,” the release said.
“In her spare time, she is a nail technician with a dedicated clientele including family amongst others and while not doing this she loves to read and watch historical documentaries. Miss Cornwall said that she is extremely happy and was excited when she heard she won the competition and she would like to encourage others to participate in further competitions. Overall she said that she took the chance to grab the opportunity to widen her horizons and forge greater connections for the future,” the release said.
The BHC said it is delighted with the response to the RBC for a day competition and the high quality of the entries. The RBC for the day will [allow] Alysha to gain insight and a better understanding of the role of an RBC. It will provide an excellent opportunity for Alysha engage with the work on a deeper level and enhance her professional work experience, the High Commission said.
Resident British Commissioner – H.E Geoff Patton said: “I am very excited about what we have planned for Alysha and looking forward to spending the day with her. It is my hope that Alysha will have an interesting day and that she gains valuable insight from the experience,” according to the release.
“On International Women’s Day on March 8th, Miss Cornwall would be engaging in numerous activities including a lobbying exercise, hosting a lunch with prominent female leaders in the Country and a media interview. The British High Commission expresses thanks to its main Partner DMV-SVG Mutual Aid Relief,” the release said.
“DMV-SVG Mutual Aid Relief is a group of Returned Peace Corps Volunteers and concerned citizens in the Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia (DMV) areas of the United States who work cooperatively with government and charitable organizations in Saint Vincent & the Grenadines to address the needs of Vincentian women, children and families,” the release said.
“The organization was founded in 2021 by Dr Remidene Aboko-Cole Diakite and Ms Diamond Elam, in response to the La Soufriere volcano eruption. Since that time, DMV-SVG Mutual Aid Relief has proudly supported children and families through their 2022 School Supply Drive and Distribution, Menstrual Supplies and Bra Donation Drives, 2023 Girls’ Empowerment Summit, as well as other events,” the release added.
