10 Vincy athletes attain CARIFTA qualifications in recent trials

A total of 10 athletes were successful in attaining qualifications in the 2024 TASVG Carifta Trials held on March 9th & 10th, according to Team Athletics SVG.

CARIFTA means Caribbean Free Trade Association and the CARIFTA Games which give Caribbean athletes an international platform began in 1972.

Trials are held throughout the region by athletics bodies to register participants’ performance and whether they meet the established CARIFTA standards.

In St. Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG), the trials were held at the Sir Vincent Beache National Stadium and attracted athletes from Barbados.

According to a press release from TASVG, the qualifying athletes from St. Vincent and the Grenadines are J’mar Saunders in the Under 20 Boys 100m category, Keo Davis in the Under 20 Boys 100m and 200m categories, Ajay Delpesche in the Under 20 Boys 100m and 400m categories, and Timothy Williams in the Under 20 Boys 200m category.

Also qualifying are Henree-K Francois in the Under 20 Boys 5000m category, Matthew Robinson in Octathlon, Jaheim Williams in Octathlon, and Shykeina Francis in the Under 17 Girls 200m category.

According to the press release, two (2) athletes made the B qualification standards at the trials. These are Zichri Hepburn in the Under 20 Boys 1500m and Kessian John in the Under 17 Girls 1500m.

During the trials, sprinter Keo Davis set a new national record in his 200m event in the Under 20 Boys category. The record of 20.87s has also qualified him for the  World Athletics U20 Championships in Peru, in August.
