The Ministry of Health, Wellness and the Environment (MOHWE) has issued a statement on the March 19 shooting incident that took place at the country’s main hospital.
In a March 20 press release, the Ministry of Health, Wellness and the Environment (MOHWE) said that at approximately 1130pm on Tuesday March 19, 2024, there was a shooting incident involving a warded patient at the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital (MCMH).
“There were no physical injuries to any staff members or other patients as a result of this disturbing incident,” the ministry said in the press release.
The MOHWE including the management team at the MCMH said in the press release that it wishes to commend the brave work of the team of health care workers on duty during this incident who remained focused on saving lives and the well being of our patients. The MOHWE also acknowledges the additional support and security provided by the RSVGPF immediately after the incident.
The ministry said: “The Psychosocial team of the MOHWE has been activated and commenced the provision of support to the healthcare team and the patients at the MCMH”.
The MOHWE said it commits to reviewing the security measures currently in place at the MCMH and our other facilities with a view to the implementation of additional measures identified to be necessary.
The MOHWE said it requests the support of the nation as we continue to work to provide health care services in safe and health enhancing environments.
A man who was nursing a gunshot wound he received at Ottley Hall on Sunday March 17, was shot while being warded at the MCMH on Tuesday.
The incident has sent shockwaves throughout the nation.
