A man was arrested and charged today (March 22) after police conducted an operation and found two illegal firearms at his home.

In a press release issued on March 22, the Royal St. Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force said they arrested and charged Courtney Phillips, a 25-year old Labourer of Edinboro with Unlawful Possession of two (2) 12-gauge shotgun cartridges without a licence issued under the Firearms Act.

In recent times, there has been an up tick in gun-related activities in the Edinboro/Ottley Hall area of West Kingstown.

Police are also raising awareness, nationwide, about gun amnesty and are encouraging Vincentians with unregistered guns and ammunition to turn them in without penalties. The National Gun Amnesty Programme began on March 1st and will conclude on May 31st.

According to the press release, Phillips was arrested about 1:00 a.m. on Wednesday 20 March 2024 during an operation conducted by the police in Edinboro.

“The defendant appeared at the Kingstown Magistrate Court on Thursday 21st March 2024 and pleaded not guilty to the charge. He was granted bail in the sum of $5000.00ECC, with one surety and was placed on a curfew from 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. at his home of residency. He was further ordered to report at the Central Police Station every Monday between 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m,” police said in the release.

Police said the matter was adjourned and transferred to the Serious Offences Court for trial on August 12th, 2024.

Meanwhile, police said that on Wednesday 20th March 2024, they arrested and charged Roderick Alexander, a 35-year-old Labourer of Lowmans Hill with the offences of Aggravated Robbery and Possession of a firearm without a licence issued under the Firearms Act.

In a March 22 press release the RSVGPF said Alexander is accused of using a firearm to rob a 37-year-old resident of Questelles. The offences were committed on Sunday February 25, 2024, about 10:30 p.m. in Campden Park.

“The defendant was arraigned at the Kingstown Magistrate Courton Thursday 21st March 2024. He was not required to plea to the indictable charge of Aggravated Robbery. However, he pleaded not guilty to the firearm charge and was granted bail in the sum of $5000.00ECC with one surety,” police said.

“In addition, Alexander was ordered to report at the Questelles Police Station every Monday between 8:00 am and 6:00 p.m. Stop Notices were placed at Ports of Entry and Exit.  He was ordered to surrender all Travel documents to the court and not to have any contact with the complainant,” police added.
