Some operators of minivans that service communities in the Marriqua Constituency and its environs have planned a two-day strike over deplorable road conditions.
According to a press release sent to One News SVG on Sunday, March 24, the strike is planned for Monday, March 25 and Tuesday, March 26, 2024.
Some of the communities that will be impacted are areas of Gomea, Collins, Evesham,
Carriere, and Mt Pleasant in the Marriaqua constituency.
“All Minivan Operators in these areas have agreed to halt all operations on the aforementioned
strike days. This strike come as a result of the poor road conditions that have inflicted
unjustifiable wear and tear and parts replacement on the minivans and private vehicle that
operate on these roads,” the press release stated.
“The recent increase in vehicle license fees has added an even greater financial burden on minivan operators. The deplorable state of the roads has been overlooked for too many years, which has been deemed by the minibus drivers as unacceptable and has left them demanding better roads,” the press release added.
The operators of the participating minivans apologize for any inconvenience to their customers that the strike may cause, but implore the necessity of these actions to ensure the safety and longevity
of all road users, the release states.
“The strikes seek to protest the poor conditions of the roads, and the operators are prepared in the instance that they do not receive a satisfactory response from the relevant officials, to proceed with further strikes,” the release further stated.
