Tropical Shipping said it donated EC $3000 to SVG Swimming Federation (President – Stephen Joachim) for their Grassroots Swim Programmes in Owia and Indian Bay.

In a press release, Tropical Shipping said the programme in Owia runs for 12 weeks starting in April with Coach Troy Lavia leading 15 children on swim drills, techniques, and general conditioning.

The company said the Indian Bay, programme commenced 27th April with about 20 children also for 12 weeks under the leadership of Coach Gary John guiding the participants in similar swim principles and techniques as Coach Troy of the Owia programme.

“Cedric McIntyre, Island Manager – Tropical Shipping was present on the 1st day of the Indian Bay program and distributed branded swim caps to Coach Gary. In addition to the Caps, the funds will go towards meals and coaching for both groups,” the press release stated.

Louise Mitchell, coordinator of the Swimming Federation’s Grassroots Swimming Programme expressed her gratitude to Tropical Shipping for supporting the Federation in its continued efforts to ensure more Vincentian children have access to the life skill of swimming, a must for members of coastal communities, the press release stated.

According to the press release, McIntyre told participants that discipline is “doing what you have to do when you don’t want to do it” and to make the sacrifice to come out to the swim camp every Saturday.

He said it was a privilege to be able to make a meaningful contribution to the development of swimming in St. Vincent & The Grenadines and that such a donation, falls under the company’s corporate social responsibility policy emphasizing youth entrepreneurship, sports, learning, and educational initiatives, according to the press release.
