Minister of Agriculture, Forestry, Fisheries, Rural Transformation, Industry & Labour – Hon. Saboto Caesar has announced a free training for 100 persons in long line finishing.

He made the announcement today (May 20) during remarks at the 47th anniversary of Fisherman’s Day Competition ceremony at Calliaqua.

According to Marine Stewardship Council, longline fisheries trail a long line, or main line, behind a boat.

“Baited hooks are attached to the nets at intervals to attract the target species. Longlines can be set for pelagic (midwater) or demersal (bottom) fishing, depending on the target species,” the website says.

The agriculture minister said there is a need for a more multifaceted approach to fishing as the country’s food demands are expanding.

Mr. Caesar said in the next few weeks the programme to train 100 person in long line fishing will commence.

He said he is encouraging interested persons to visit the Fisheries Division to collect registration forms.

Meanwhile a total of 114 boats participated in this year’s competition up from 108 last year.

A total of 48 boats participated this year up from 40 last year.

The total catch 2727 for this year was pounds as opposed to 3,655 pounds last year.

Fishers said today was hard hence the limited catch.
