Parliamentary Representative and Friends raise $12,000 for North Leeward Carnival

The North Leeward Sports and Cultural Organisation received a cash injection of $12,000 from the Parliamentary Representative for the area – Hon. Carlos James and friends.

The donation was made on June 18.

Speaking at a press conference, Mr. James who is also the Minister of Culture in St. Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) said he raised the funds after seeing the challenges that the rural Carnival committee had been experiencing in North Leeward.

“I said look, I have to get involved, and with the support of a few of my friends, friends of North Leeward, we decided we were going to put together some funding,” he said, noting that some of the funding is personal.

“We decided we were going to give support to this committee and I am sure that they’re scratching their heads after the week of activities because they have a lot of bills to cover,” he said.

Mr. James also used the opportunity to encourage Corporate St. Vincent and the Grenadines to invest more in culture.

He said: “By this show of support to my constituency and the rural carnival committee, I want this to be an example to some of Corporate St. Vincent and the Grenadines who are shying away from supporting carnival”.

He said that had it not been for his intervention and his ability to draw on resources, the planning committee for the rural carnival in North Leeward might not be able to meet some of their financial commitments.

“…and they are fortunate to have Carlos James as the Parliamentary Representarive and as Minister of Culture because if I was wasn’t able to draw on these resources, I don’t know where they were going to find the resources to cover a lot of the bills,” Mr. James said.

I want the people of North Leeward to understand and appreciate that what we do, we do it selflessly for you to ensure that whether it is in sports, culture, education, or healthcare, we put the resources in, Mr. James added.
