The Royal Saint Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force (RSVGPF) announced on July 11 that it will host an advanced forensic training program for members of the police force.

“The training will feature a blend of lectures and practical hands-on exercises, providing a well-rounded educational experience. The program will commence on Monday, July 15, 2024 at 9:00 a.m. and conclude on Friday, July 19, 2024,” police said.

Police said the initiative, developed in collaboration with the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Consulate in Canada and Mr. Peter Gendi, a Detective Sergeant with the Toronto Police Service, aims to significantly enhance our forensic capabilities.

The RSVGPF said it is committed to training its officers in state-of-the-art crime scene forensic sciences.

It said Mr. Gendi, the main facilitator, will lead 40 of our officers through a rigorous program designed to equip them with vital forensic skills. Participants will delve into crucial aspects of crime scene investigation, including:

1. Establishing paths of contamination

2. Documenting crime scenes

3. Locating, recording, collecting, and preserving evidence

In a notable addition, the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Consulate in Canada will donate crime scene kits to the RSVGPF, enhancing our forensic toolkit and supporting our mission to uphold justice, police said.

The country has seen record numbers of homicides over the years, the majority of which are still unsolved.

In 2022, the country recorded 42 homicides which was a record until an unprecedented 55 homicides were recorded in 2023.

So far for 2024, some 25 homicides have been recorded.

There have been calls for better focus on crime scene forensics in the country.
