Nicolás Maduro Moros, 61, has been reelected as the President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela according to the preliminary results released by the country’s Electoral Commission.
On July 28, millions of Venezuelans went to the polls to elect a new government to run the country for the next six years (2025-2031). The people chose and their choice was to give Mr. Maduro and his United Socialist Party of Venezuela the nod.
Maduro was rivaled by a number of opposition parties that formed an alliance which was led by 74-year-old Edmundo González Urrutia. There were also several independent candidates.
According to the results, Mr. Maduro’s United Socialist Party of Venezuela received over 5.1 million votes or 51.20 percent of the votes while the alliance of opposition parties led by Mr. González received over 4.4 million votes or 44.20 percent of the votes. The remaining votes went to other candidates.
More than 21 million Venezuelans were registered to vote in the presidential elections. The voter turnout was 59 percent.
“Today there will be peace, stability, respect for the law, and justice,” Mr. Maduro said to thousands of supporters gathered in Caracas to celebrate the victory.
He thanked God and the people for the victory and urged people to respect the country’s constitution.
Mr. Maduro’s victory is likely to be interpreted through mixed lens.
On the one hand, it will likely be viewed as a major victory for Venezuelans who have been tired of what they have said are attempts by the USA to interfere with Venezuela’s sovereignty.
On the other hand, the victory will likely be viewed as a blow to the political right and their inability to remove the left’s grip on power in the South American country.
In pre-election statements, Mr. Maduro said that the country’s economy has been able to recover despite the continued economic sanctions imposed on Venezuela by the USA.
Mr. Maduro will be sworn in for the third consecutive term as president in January 2025.
