After Hurricane Beryl destroyed the electrical distribution system in Union Island, 1 month and 3 weeks ago, pole lights have been turned on in Clifton Union Island.

In a post, community activist and teacher – Mr. Abdon Whyte said: “It’s incredible that after all the poles were destroyed and the power plant at Vinlec was badly damaged, we finally have electricity running” through the city.

The state-owned St. Vincent Electricity Services Limited – VINLEC with help from regional entities has been working to reestablish the primary and secondary distribution network and supply electricity to the Clifton commercial area, the Union Island airport, and the hospital.

The island is slowly recovering after the category 4 hurricane damaged or destroyed more than 95 percent of houses, livelihoods, and the electrical distribution system on July 1.

Other Southern Grenadine islands – Canouan, Mayreau, Palm Island, and Petite St. Vincent that were impacted by the hurricane are also recovering.

According to reports, six people lost their lives as a result of the hurricane.
