While St. Vincent and the Grenadines recorded 31.60 percent passes for mathematics at the CSEC level, students at the CAPE level demonstrated outstanding performance in various mathematics subject areas.

CSEC stands for the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate and is taken mainly by students leaving secondary school while CAPE stands for the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination and is taken mainly by students leaving college.

Both exams are administered by the regional examining body – the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC).

According to the 2024 preliminary results released today (September 4) by the Ministry of Education and National Reconciliation, passing grades (Grades 1 to V) were obtained in 1,390 subject sittings representing an overall pass rate of 96.06 percent for CAPE. This represents an increase compared to the 2022 results where the overall pass rate was 95.73 percent, the ministry said.

The CAPE subject areas that recorded passes of 100 percent include Applied Mathematics Units 1 and 2, Integrated Mathematics Unit 2, Pure Mathematics Unit 2, and Physics Units 1 and 2.

Other subject areas that recorded 100% passes include Caribbean Studies Unit 2, Computer Science Units 1 and 2, Digital Media Unit 2, Environmental Science Units 1 and 2, French, Geography, Green Engineering, Literatures in English, Physical Education and Sport, Sociology, and Spanish (Units 1 and 2), and Management of Business Unit 1.

“This year’s results show that high pass rates have been maintained in most subjects taken,” the ministry said.

Preliminary Results of the May-June 2024 Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examinations (CAPE) show that there was a candidate entry of 397, of whom 384 were from the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Community College (SVGCC) and 13 were private candidates. The SVGCC candidates sat 1447 examinations in 23 different subjects, the ministry said.
