SVG’s 2024 CSEC pass rate higher than that of 2023

The 2024 preliminary results of the Caribbean Examinations Council’s Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) show that St. Vincent and the Grenadines attained a pass rate of 73.60 percent.

The number is a slight increase from the 72.16 percent attained in 2023.

The preliminary overall results were released today (September 4) by the Ministry of Education and National Reconciliation after some delays the ministry said were due to inconsistencies. 

“On the heels of a request for the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) to review our initial preliminary results following detected inconsistencies, the Ministry of Education is now happy to release the 2024 CSEC results. Our decision was aimed at ensuring the accuracy of the reported data before public dissemination,” the ministry said. 

The Ministry of Education said the updated preliminary results of the 2024 May-June Caribbean Examinations Council Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC)examinations were received on 29 August, 2024. This year, 2234 candidates were registered and of these, 1484 were school candidates and 750 were private candidates. 

There were 1477 school candidates from 27 secondary schools sitting papers I and II with 10120 subject entries in 31 subject areas. Approximately 73.60% of the subject entries were awarded Grades I – III. The corresponding figure in 2023 was 72.16%. 

This year, students from St. Vincent and the Grenadines attained 17.20 percent in Grade 1 passes (the highest lass in CSEC), 40.67 percent in Grade 2s, and 42.13 percent in Grade 3s.

Five schools attained pass rates of 80 percent or higher. At the top is the St. Vincent Girls’ High School with 96.59 percent, the St. Vincent Grammar School with 91.15 percent, then the St. Martins Secondary School with 90.37 percent, then the St. Joseph’s Convent Kingstown with 85.54 percent, and the Thomas Saunders Secondary School with 82.79 percent. 

The top passes per subject area include Theatre Arts at 100% passes, Physical Education and Sport at 97.4 percent, Office Administration at 95.81 percent, and Industrial Technology at 93.75 percent. 

The subject areas with the lowest performance include Mathematics at 31.60 percent, Spanish at 46.31 percent, Textiles Clothing and Fashion at 51.79 percent, and Geography at 52.58 percent.
