The Georgetown Secondary School in St. Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) has won the CARICOM High School Agriculture Competition.
In a Facebook post today (January 21), CARICOM said it announced the results following an additional review of the competition and submissions.
The Georgetown Secondary School (St Vincent and the Grenadines) placed first, Mopan Technical High School (Belize) placed second, and Pleasantville Secondary School (Trinidad and Tobago) placed third.
A virtual presentation ceremony will be held at a time and place to be announced, the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) said.
Over 40 schools across the Caribbean region participated in the competition which CARICOM said was held to encourage students to showcase successful agriculture programs, promote sustainable practices, and inspire interest in agriculture as a career option.
The Georgetown Secondary School, in its promotional video published in December, said over 70 students were participating in its agriculture programme.

In the school’s promotional video, one of its agriculture students said:
“On our school farm, we use sustainable practices such as plastic mulch to conserve moisture and intercropping. With the guidance from CARDI’s Sweet Potato Project , we’ve adopted and planted high performing, drought resilient sweet potato varieties.
These efforts not only help us grow nutritious crops but also prepare us to various challenges in agriculture.

About the competition, from CARICOM’s website:
The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat, in collaboration with the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA), has launched a Regional High School Youth in Agriculture Video Competition.
The competition – an outcome of the 17th Caribbean Week of Agriculture held in St. Vincent and the Grenadines last month – provides an opportunity for students to use their creativity to showcase, in a one-minute video, the vital role agriculture plays in their community, country, and the Region.

The competition aims to raise awareness and showcase successful agriculture production programmes that are being led by high school students throughout CARICOM; educate young people about the significance of agriculture to food security, sustainability, and economic development; showcase innovations, techniques, and ideas that make the field exciting and impactful; promote sustainable agricultural practices and inspire participants to advocate for and implement these practices in their communities; and inspire interest in agriculture as a successful career option or business opportunity.
Guidelines for the competition can be accessed here. Students must submit entries by the deadline, 2 December 2024, for a chance to win prizes ranging from US$1 700 – US$1 000.
