CWSA Concludes Inaugural Environmentally Friendly Schools Competition

The Central Water and Sewerage Authority (CWSA) has announced the conclusion of its first Environmentally Friendly Schools Competition with the prize giving ceremony, scheduled for later this week.

This initiative launched on September 12, 2023, in collaboration with the CWSA,t he Ministry of Education, Coreas Distribution Ltd and the St. Vincent Electricity Services Ltd (VINLEC) was conceptualized to encourage environmental
awareness and shared responsibility within primary and secondary schools across St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

The premise of the competition is to create and encourage continued environmental awareness through projects and programmes, beneficial to the entire school population.

Judging for this competition began April 24, 2024 and ended on June 26 2024. Nineteen (19) schools participated in the competition with fourteen (14) primary and five (5) secondary.

The institutions were judged based on their Environmental Awareness (15 points), Collection and Documentation of data (30 points), Delivery of the message (15 points), Creativity (15 points), the project’s influence on students (10 points), and student participation (15 points), totaling one
hundred (100) points.

Five (5) primary and three (3) secondary schools were chosen as the top ranked schools. In the Primary category, Tourama Government School ranked 1st, Dorsetshire Hill Government School 2nd, Barrouallie Government School 3rd, Kingstown Government School 4th and the Belmont Government School 5th. In the secondary category, St. Joseph’s Convent Marriaqua ranked 1st, followed by Girls’ High School 2nd and St. Martin’s Secondary School 3rd.

The Spring Village Methodist School was declared a model school for environmental management and awareness integration within its daily operations and curriculum, which has earned them a Special Outstanding Mention Award.

The prize giving ceremony for 2023-2024 and launch of the 2025-2026 programme is set for Thursday, February 27, 2025 at the New Montrose Technical Operations Complex on at 10:00 a.m.

The CWSA, the Ministry of Education, Coreas Distribution Ltd and VINLEC thanked all the schools who participated in its first Environmentally Friendly Schools Competition, and look forward to the second year of the competition scheduled for 2025-2026 period.
