We can confirm that a tourist was found dead today at Chatham Bay Union Island and not the Tobago Cays Marine Park as previously reported.

This was confirmed by several parties including the head of the Tobago Cays Marine Park and rangers such as Ms. Wilson. A senior member of the SVG Coast Guard also verified the information along with One News SVG sources in Union Island.

The identity of the individual has not yet been revealed.

The circumstances surrounding the discovery of the body are still unclear, but well-placed sources say the body was found on the sand.

Earlier police said they could not confirm time whether the incident was a drowning, but they are investigating the matter.

Other sources in the area say they* believe the incident to be a suspected drowning.

A postmortem is expected to be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.

At the time of the publishing of this story, the body of the deceased was being transported to mainland St. Vincent via an SVG Coast Guard vessel.

UPDATE: The communication lapse with our source came from the fact that the Coast Guard went to the Tobago Cays first and then to Chatham Bay. There was also an update sent to us by other credible sources which we did not see in a timely manner.

In the spirit of journalistic integrity, we aim to further strengthen our commitment to accuracy and will continue to verify information repeatedly before final publication to minimize human errors in sourcing.

The news of the death comes just days after a German tourist drowned at Mt. Wynne on the Leeward side of mainland St. Vincent.

We will bring more details as they come to hand from authoritative sources.

The Mt. Wynne Drowning

On February 26, police said they were investigating the circumstances surrounding the drowning of Petra Ortlepp, a 58-year-old German national, at Mt. Wynne on Wednesday, February 26, 2025.

In a February 26 press release, the Royal St. Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force (RSVGPF) said: Reports indicate that Ortlepp was swimming with friends around midday when she was later seen floating face down in the water. Efforts to revive her were unsuccessful.

Medical personnel, arrived at the scene and pronounced her dead, and authorization was given for the removal of the body, police said.

A postmortem examination will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death, police said.

Investigations are ongoing. Our condolences go out to the grieving family and friends during this difficult time, the RSVGPF said.
