Trinidadians will elect a new government on Monday, April 28, 2025 after the country’s newly sworn-in Prime Minister Stuart Young called a general election.
Mr. Young who was sworn-in as the country’s eight prime minister on April 17, announced a Cabinet reshuffle and then less than 24 hours later, called the election.
In a March 18 media release, the Office of the Prime Minister of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago said:
“Prime Minister the Hon Stuart R. Young SC has advised Her Excellency Christine
Kangaloo, O.R.T.T. President of the
Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, to dissolve Parliament with effect from midnight on Tuesday 18th March, 2025 in accordance with Section 68 of the Constitution.”
“The Prime Minister has also advised the President that, in accordance with Section 33 of the Representation of the People Act, Chap. 2:01, Writs of Election for the 2025 General Elections are to be issued on the 18 day of March, 2025 and are to fix Friday 4″, April, 2025 as Nomination Day and Monday 28″ April, 2025 as Polling Day.”

Mr. Young who leads the incumbent People’s National Movement (PNM) succeeded Dr. Keith Rowley who resigned as Prime Minister after two consecutive terms (2015-2025) saying he hopes to spend time with his family after serving the country for more than 40 years.
Mr. Young will likely face opposition leader and former prime minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar who will lead a coalition party with the United National Congress (UNC) being the dominant party in the opposition coalition.
General elections are also expected to be held in St. Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) and Jamaica this year.
