A young Vincentian athlete, Ted Roberts Jr., aged 23 and hailing from Arnos Vale, is making his mark in college football in the United States of America.

Roberts, currently a junior defensive player for the Concord University football team in West Virginia, has excelled on the pitch, recently being named the “2024 Male Breakthrough Athlete of the Year”.

He was also twice voted Mountain East Conference Defensive Player, leading his team to their first-ever NCAA Division II tournament finals-an unprecedented achievement in the university’s history.

During the tournament, Roberts was the only player to feature in all 22 matches throughout the season, recording three goals and six assists. He was also selected for the DSCCA All-Atlantic Region second team.

Roberts is no stranger to high-level competition, having previously represented the St Vincent and the Grenadines National Under-20 football team in Nicaragua, as well as the Senior Men’s National Team, making his debut against Curaçao and the British Virgin Islands in the 2021 CONCACAF World Cup Qualifiers.

Roberts attributes his success to hard work and dedication to the sport. Academically, he continues to excel, having been recognised as a Dean’s List awardee at Ranger College, Allen Community College, and most recently at Concord University, maintaining a consistent GPA of 3.8 or above. The student-athlete is currently pursuing a BSc in Health Science with a minor in Pre-Athletic Training.

He further emphasised that his foundation in football began at the age of six with the System 3 Sports Academy Football Club, noting that the training he received there was fundamental to his development. During his formative years, he alternated between playing in defence and midfield.

Roberts expressed his gratitude to Mr Ian Sardine, founder of the Academy, who played a pivotal role in securing a partial football scholarship for him in 2021, as well as to the Government of St Vincent and the Grenadines for their financial support towards his educational advancement.

He also thanked God, his parents Ted and Juovanie Roberts, his peers, and other family members for their unwavering support during his time overseas.

Roberts encourages young aspiring footballers to be disciplined, work hard, and pursue their dreams, believing that “in the heart of every young person lies the potential for greatness”.
