A 22-year-old resident has launched an initiative to encourage young people in the St. Georges communities to avoid involvement with firearms.

The initiative, Bikes Up, Guns Down, is being led by entrepreneur Reyheem John of Belair, a former student of the St. Vincent and the Grenadines West St. George Secondary School.

Mr John explained that the initiative operates by organising bike rides, community events, and awareness campaigns designed to motivate young people to put down weapons and take up cycling instead.

“We gather riders from different areas, promote positive messages, and offer mentorship and support. It’s not just about riding-it’s about creating a lifestyle focused on growth, respect, and community,” the 22-year-old said.

So far, under the initiative, sixty youths from Belair, Gomea, Glen, and Arnos Vale have participated in an event at Gomea Methodist School. On 24 April, they were rewarded with a number of prizes for riding their bikes.

Mr Reyheem John told One News SVG, “I decided to launch Bikes Up: Guns Down to give the youth in my community a positive alternative to violence. Too many young people are getting involved in crime, and I wanted to create something that would steer them in a better direction. This initiative gives them a chance to use their energy in a meaningful way and make a positive impact.”

“The main goals of Bikes Up: Guns Down are to promote peace, unity, and positive engagement among young people. I hope this movement will reduce violence and help the youth develop discipline, teamwork, and purpose. By bringing the community together through biking events and outreach, we aim to build stronger, safer neighbourhoods across St Vincent,” Mr John added.
