With chronic non-communicable diseases on the rise, one company has taken a bold step to encourage its staff to invest more in their health.
Coreas Hazells Inc. has invested $10,000 in prizes for staff members participating in the company’s second annual Coreas Staff Step Challenge, which encourages employees to walk 10,000 steps each day over a six-week period.
More than 150 staff members across Coreas’ companies—namely Corea and Co., Coreas Building Supplies, Coreas Auto Supplies, and Coreas Pharmacies—have so far registered to take part in the challenge. All participants have signed up for the group app that monitors the number of steps taken by each staff member.
Marketing Coordinator of Coreas Hazells Inc., Ms Sharifa Wynne, said the step challenge is part of the company’s ongoing commitment to wellness.
“The whole overview of this challenge is to encourage healthy living while making 10,000 steps a day for the next six weeks,” Ms Wynne told One News SVG on Thursday, 22 May, during the launch of this year’s challenge.

During the launch, staff walked from Coreas Car Park in Kingstown, through Town Hill, Sion Hill, and Murray’s Road, before returning to Coreas Car Park.
Ms Wynne also explained how staff members can win various prizes:
“We have $10,000 in cash and prizes up for grabs. The top stepper at the end of these six weeks will win $1,000 in cash, and every week we’ll have a new activity where staff can win $100, $75, or $50,” she said.
“We’re also giving away food vouchers and other gifts throughout the six-week period.”
She added:
“Last year we did wonderfully with it and staff kept asking us to bring it back. So, we brought it back again for this year. It’s just to get people fit and ready for Carnival season, but also to help them improve their lifestyle.”
Use of Technology
Ms Wynne explained, “It’s the step-up app, so we can see everyone’s steps each day during the entire six weeks.”
Although the challenge was officially launched on 22 May, it began on Monday, 19 May, and some staff members have already made significant progress.

“So far, we’ve had staff clocking upwards of 20,000 to 30,000 steps a day. We’ve found that some are putting in the extra effort to reach that goal of 10,000 steps a day,” she added.
She also noted that the initiative is a good way for staff from different departments to get to know each other:
“If we have staff members who are a bit shy about walking on their own, they would feel more comfortable walking in a group setting, knowing that there are others around as well.”
Multiple studies have indicated that fitness walking has numerous health benefits and plays a vital role in preventing Non-Communicable Diseases – NCDs.
