A student from the School for Children with Special Needs, Kingstown, has made history by becoming the school’s first pupil to sit the Caribbean Primary Exit Assessment (CPEA) — and has successfully passed the examination.
Thomas George, aged 13, ranked among the top 80 boys, according to preliminary results.
He placed 79th among boys and 173rd overall. There were 866 male candidates and 816 female candidates, a total of 1682 pupils registered to take the final assessment.
Mr George, who is autistic, was interviewed by One News SVG’s Havlyn Gill shortly after completing the examination on 15 May. In that interview, he expressed confidence in his performance in the final CPEA examination.
One News SVG also spoke with Thomas, his mother, and his teacher, Ms Reba Cozier, all of whom were very emotional, moved to tears, and excited by the achievement.
An interview will be broadcast soon.

“The preliminary results of the 2025 Caribbean Primary Exit Assessment (CPEA) indicate that 1,470 students (87.34 per cent) met the prescribed standard, a slight decrease from last year’s 87.68 per cent. This group includes 722 males and 748 females, reflecting continued strong participation and achievement across genders,” the Ministry of Education stated in a press release announcing the results on June 21.
The Ministry added:
“The CPEA evaluates students through two main components: the External Assessment, comprising multiple-choice tests in Mathematics, Science, Language Arts, and Social Studies; and the School-Based Assessment, which includes a project, writing portfolio, book report, teacher tests, pupil-made tests, and Can-Do-Skills exercises across the same subject areas.
The CPEA is scored out of 500 marks, with the School-Based Assessment accounting for 40 per cent (200 marks) and the External Assessment for 60 per cent (300 marks). Students must achieve at least 50 per cent of the total possible marks to meet the required standard.
The final examinations took place on 14 and 15 May 2025, marking a significant milestone in the academic journey of our young learners. This year, 1,689 students registered for the CPEA, with 1,682 sitting the final examinations.”
The Ministry of Education extends its heartfelt congratulations to all students for their hard work and dedication. It also expresses sincere gratitude to head teachers, teachers, other school staff, parents, and all stakeholders for their invaluable support throughout this process.
