Mr Darron Rodan John, a lecturer by profession, has been selected as the Unity Labour Party’s (ULP) candidate for the South Windward constituency in the upcoming general election.

Mr John was nominated by the Chairman of the ULP South Windward Constituency Council, Mr Maurice Roberts, during a candidate selection conference held this evening (19 July) at the Biabou Methodist School.

His candidacy will now be forwarded to the party’s Central Executive for formal ratification.

The 35-year-old will succeed the Honourable Frederick Augustus Stephenson, who has served as the constituency’s Member of Parliament since 2010. Mr Stephenson secured victories in three consecutive elections: 2010, 2015, and 2020.

Mr John now faces the challenge of consolidating support among party delegates, many of whom were divided in their allegiance prior to the selection conference. In particular, he will need to strengthen unity in the Stubbs area, where former contender Mr Louis Daisely enjoyed considerable support. Mr Daisely reportedly withdrew from the race several days* prior to the candidate selection event.

Mr Darron John is set to contest the seat against Mr Andrew John of the main opposition New Democratic Party (NDP), a retired educator.

South Windward has traditionally been a stronghold for the ULP, which has held the seat continuously since 1994.

The next general election in St Vincent and the Grenadines is anticipated to be held by November 2025, though it is constitutionally due by February 2026.

Background:

Mr John, a resident of Biabou, is currently a lecturer in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) at the St Vincent and the Grenadines Community College (SVGCC). He is recognised as an expert in digital transformation and holds both bachelor’s and master’s degrees. He is presently pursuing a PhD in Business Administration at National Dong Hwa University in Taiwan, where he is researching technology adoption in financial services.
