The Emancipation Cricket Festival presents, John Campbell, international marquee player, Leeward Lions

When Chris Gayle’s abilities began to diminish as a consequence of age, Jamaica pinned their hopes to another pulsating, opening left-hander: John Campbell. Even before his First-class debut with Jamaica, Jamaicans were cautiously optimistic about Campbell’s future when he struck a composed yet brisk, century in the 2012 Under 19 cricket world cup for the West Indies. His senior debut with Jamaica followed on the heels of his impressive under 19 world cup showing and he has been a regular and key player with the national team ever since.

It was clear that he had a penchant for scoring quickly, favoring aggression over stoicism when his maiden Fist-class century consisted of 110 runs from 180 balls against the Leeward Islands. In 2019, he debuted in Test for the West Indies but unsurprisingly, it was in the more abridged format of the game that he announced his prowess that same year. In an ODI against Ireland, he scored his maiden ODI century, 179 runs in a record-breaking partnership of 365 runs with Shai Hope, his opening partner. It is the highest opening partnership in ODIs. Campbell has over 5,500 first-class runs, and a batting average of 49 in ODIs with a strike rate of above 100. Fans can reasonably expect to be thrilled by his swashbuckling batting. And if required, he can bowl left-arm spin. His best bowling figures in First-class cricket is 7/73. It is left to be seen if opposing teams can tranquilize such a boundless lion during the Emancipation Cricket Festival.
