The Emancipation Cricket Festival presents, Obed McCoy, Leeward Lions, local marquee player.
The current poster boy of Vincentian cricket, Obed is a left-arm fast bowler known for his skillful variations of pace that can make him a tough customer for batsmen, especially in the T20 format.
Obed demonstrated fearsome pace while still a teenager and was earmarked as one for the future as proven by his selection to the West Indies under-19 cricket squad for the 2016 under 19 world cup. His List A debut quickly followed in the regional Super 50 Cup in the 2016-2017 season.
His T20 debut came in the CPL for St. Lucia stars 2017 and within a year of his regional T20 debut, he became an international cricketer for the West Indies senior men’s team and has remained a part of the West Indies set up although intermittently constrained by injury.
His debut for the West Indies was an ODI against India but it was in T20 cricket that Obed distinguished himself on the international scene.
In 2022, against India, he took 6 wickets for 17 runs, the best bowling figures by a West Indies player in T20 cricket and the best bowling figures by any bowler against India in T20 cricket. Inevitably, such an illustrious performance against a potent India side ensured that his name was favorably discussed among the coaches of global T20 franchises.
He was drafted by Rajasthan Royals in the IPL in 2022 and this marked the beginning of a busy career of franchise cricket around the globe.
Obed’s pace and variations with the new ball and ability to bowl at the death, are going to be key to the fortunes of the Leeward Lions in the Emancipation Cricket Festival. He always relishes playing at home at Arnos Vale, and we expect him to be a favorite among all the fans.
