Nearly 50,000 customers of St. Vincent Electricity Services Ltd (VINLEC) will be connected to a new type of meter over the coming weeks and months.
The announcement was made today (August 11), at an event hosted by VINLEC to launch the Sensus Smart Meter.
The programme to install the new meters is set to begin as early as next week and will continue for 15 to 18 months, by which time the entire country will be AMI-ready.
According to IMB.com, Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) is an integrated fixed-network system that enables two-way communication between utilities and customers.
As the sole commercial supplier of electricity in St. Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG), VINLEC expects to enhance system efficiency and increase accountability to its customers with the new Sensus Smart Meters.
The smart meters have several features, including faster data collection, consistent billing periods, and laying the foundation for future innovation.
These meters can be read without the need for individuals to enter properties and are ready for solar power integration. Customers’ data are encrypted.
The company stated that the meters also allow for prepaid usage, giving tenants and renters control over utilities in rent and lease agreements.
It is not the first time that VINLEC is upgrading its metering system.
