The University of the West Indies (UWI) Global Campus in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, in collaboration with The Friends of Oscar Allen, will host the Annual Oscar Allen Memorial Emancipation Lecture on Thursday, August 21, 2025, at 6 p.m. at the UWI Global Campus SVG.
Dr. Andrea K. Veira, a Vincentian Lecturer in Teacher Education at the UWI Five Islands Campus, will deliver this year’s keynote address on the topic: ‘From Plantation to Plate: Food Sovereignty as True Emancipation.’ The lecture will explore historical food injustices, contemporary dependency, and the path towards resilient, self-reliant food systems in the Caribbean.
With over 15 years of experience in education and agricultural development across the Caribbean, Dr. Veira has worked extensively in teacher education, adult education for farmers, and agricultural research. Her expertise encompasses agroecology, biodiversity, and the integration of technology in education and agriculture.
An exhibition will also be held to complement the lecture, offering a tangible, visual, and interactive experience that reinforces and deepens the subject matter. This exhibition is expected to begin at 3 p.m. on Thursday, August 21, 2025, at the UWI Global Campus SVG.
The Global Campus St. Vincent and the Grenadines encourages the public to attend this lecture.
