St. Vincent and the Grenadines’ Marslyn Lewis represented the Caribbean at the Women Fisheries and Fisherfolk Platform’s (WFFP) first-ever standalone Global Fisherwomen Assembly in Thailand, held from August 12–17, 2025.
This gathering aimed at amplifying women’s voices in fisheries, shaping policy, and strengthening global advocacy for gender equality.
The WFFP, in partnership with the Thailand Fisherfolk Organization and the sustainable Development Foundation, successfully hosted its first-ever standalone Global Fisherwomen Assembly.

The event brought together women from fisheries sectors worldwide to share experiences, forge global sisterhood ties, and collaborate on policies supporting women in the fishing industry.
Marslyn Lewis, one of St.Vincent and the Grenadines’ leading sea moss entrepreneurs, was selected to represent her country in a dual role as an Executive of the Seamoss Association of SVG, showcasing women-led, value-added sea moss production and a representative of the National Fisherfolk Organization (NFO) of SVG, advocating for fisherwomen’s rights, community support, and policy development.

The assembly consisted of participants from eight Caribbean countries: St. Vincent & the Grenadines, St. Lucia, St. Kitts & Nevis, Anguilla, The Bahamas, Trinidad & Tobago, and Belize.
Discussions focused on empowerment, environmental justice, cultural preservation, and legal advocacy, aiming to elevate the voice of women in fisheries at a global level.
The assembly also reinforced the objectives of WFFP’s Global Campaign for Fisherwomen with emphasis on gender rights, fisher identity, community and customary rights, climate justice, and human rights advocacy.
“Being selected to represent St. Vincent & the Grenadines in both the Seamoss Association and the NFO allowed me to bring local experiences and challenges to a global stage,” said Marslyn Lewis. “The assembly was an inspiring platform for collaboration, learning, and advancing policies that empower women in fisheries worldwide.”
