The General Employees Co-operative Credit Union (GECCU) continues to inspire its scholarship holders through its Annual Youth Leadership Symposium, held this year under the theme “Embracing the Pathway to Success.”
Running from 25 to 26 August, the two-day symposium kicked off with an opening ceremony at the Anglican Pastoral Centre in Montrose.
Cornelia Moses, Human Resources Manager of GECCU, spoke on behalf of Chief Executive Officer Maxine Richards-Johnney, who expressed her heartfelt congratulations to each scholarship recipient for being part of this year’s symposium. She noted, “GEECU has proudly supported the dreams of young people for over 40 years through its scholarship program, helping students to achieve their academic goals—and you are no exception.”
Moses also highlighted the purpose of the leadership symposium, explaining: “Building on this legacy, the GECCU Youth Symposium was launched in 2012 to expose our scholarship recipients to the values and principles of the co-operative movement, and to create a space where you can be inspired, challenged, and empowered — not just in your studies, but as future leaders, innovators, and change-makers in your communities.”
She further added: “Our CEO encourages each of you to embrace every learning experience, remain curious, and continue to develop your skills and character. Success is more than grades; it is about resilience, values, and making a positive impact wherever you go.”

Past GECCU scholar Nafesha Richardson shared with the current scholars that being “alive, alert, awake, and enthusiastic” are key ingredients to success. She emphasised that although pathways may differ and experiences vary from person to person, each recipient should embrace their own journey and avoid comparisons with others. She encouraged them to always aim high in achieving their goals and chasing their dreams.
“Keep going and keep chasing your dreams. The only thing you should be afraid of is no longer trying, so never give up on the ability to try and never give up on your dreams. Don’t be afraid of failure. In fact, I would say that you should embrace failure. In many ways, failure is the doorway to success,” she said.
Richardson also pointed to the challenges faced by public figures such as Serena Williams and Michael B. Jordan, noting that although they encountered obstacles of their own, they have risen above them to become successful today.
The two-day symposium featured presentations, discussions, and interactive sessions that explored strategies for academic, personal, and professional growth.
This initiative underscores GECCU’s commitment to nation-building and to empowering the next generation of Vincentian leaders.
