The Dental Services Department of the Ministry of Health, Wellness and the Environment is currently hosting its annual Dental Health Awareness Week, featuring school visits, educational activities, and a Community Health Fair offering free dental screenings.

The programme, held under the theme “A Healthy Mouth is the First Step Towards a Healthy Body,” began on Sunday, September 14, and will conclude on Friday, September 19, 2025.

This year’s theme emphasises the importance of oral hygiene and regular dental care as essential parts of a healthy lifestyle. Activities will reach children, families, and communities throughout St Vincent and the Grenadines.

The first event took place on Sunday, September 14, at the Kingstown Baptist Church to officially launch the week. On September 15, and September 16, visits will be made to preschools and primary schools in Windward, Leeward, Marriaqua, Kingstown, and the Grenadines, where students will learn proper brushing and flossing techniques through fun and interactive demonstrations.

On September 17, the Community Health Fair will be held at the parking lot of the Old Treasury Building from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The public event will offer free dental screenings, opportunities to interact with medical specialists, and the distribution of oral health education materials.

On September 18, the Dental Health Forum will take place at the Peace Memorial Hall from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. A panel of three dental experts will present on topics including preventive versus restorative dentistry, the link between periodontal disease and systemic health, decision-making in saving or removing a tooth, and the psychology of the smile. The session will also include open discussion and community feedback.

An all-week media campaign is also underway, featuring a series of radio and television segments highlighting the benefits of flossing, fluoride toothpaste, and the prevention of gum disease.

“Dental Health Awareness Week aims to highlight the connection between oral health and overall wellness. By reaching children, families, and the wider community, the Ministry seeks to encourage preventive habits, reduce the burden of dental disease, and empower Vincentians to take charge of their oral health,” the Dental Services Department stated.

Dr Jevon Ollivierre, Dental Intern, added: “A healthy smile is not just about teeth – it is about confidence, nutrition, and overall well-being. Through this week of activities, we want every citizen to understand that taking care of their mouth is the first step to taking care of their body.”

The Dental Services Department also expressed gratitude to community partners and sponsors who share the commitment to promoting national health and wellness.
