The Government of St. Vincent and the Grenadines has repaired and rebuilt more than 5,000 houses over the past year to help citizens recover from Hurricane Beryl and the 2021 eruption of La Soufrière.

In an interview with the Agency for Public Information (API), Dr. Orando Brewster said that while 4,500 houses were originally earmarked, additional homes damaged during the eruption were later included.

Dr. Brewster described the achievement as “remarkable,” noting that it was completed in just over a year.

He explained that many homeowners initially opted for self-help but later returned to request assistance when they were unable to manage the labour. “We stepped in and helped with the work,” he said.

Dr. Brewster also revealed that there are currently 625 ongoing projects across the country, including the Lives to Live initiative. Of these, 124 projects have been completed in the past year, alongside the continued rebuilding of homes affected by Hurricane Beryl.

He emphasised that significant work continues to be carried out within the Ministry of Housing.
