The Rotaract Club of Kingstown launched its Super Readers Programme, bringing children from the community of Byera to the Kingstown National Public Library for three Saturdays of storytelling, library tours, and interactive reading sessions designed to spark a lifelong love of literacy.
This programme was held in observance of Basic Education and Literacy Month, which is celebrated in September.
The Rotaract Club partnered with the Pamelus Burke Government School in the community of Byera, with the initiative spearheaded by Club Service Director, Mikella Cadougan.
The programme took place over three Saturdays—13th, 20th, and 27th September 2025—at the Kingstown National Public Library. In the first week, the children enjoyed a guided tour of the library, discovering a space where imagination thrives and knowledge comes alive. In the following sessions, the stories continued—bringing books to life, expanding vocabulary, sparking conversations, and, most importantly, making reading fun.

Each session brought together Rotaractors and prospective members, who volunteered their time to read with the children.
The club stated: “The Super Readers Programme is more than storytelling; it is about empowerment.” They further explained that studies show children who build strong literacy skills early are more likely to thrive academically and beyond.
The club also highlighted the challenges children face in improving their literacy skills, stating: “Unfortunately, not all children have access to reading resources or one-on-one support.”
“By simply showing up with a book and a listening ear, our volunteers helped bridge that gap—fostering confidence, curiosity, and a stronger foundation for learning,” the club said.

This initiative reflects the Rotaract Club’s commitment to service through education, one of Rotary’s key areas of focus. It serves as a reminder that small, consistent acts—such as reading with a child—can have a profound and lasting impact. The club is proud to be shaping young minds, one page at a time.
The Rotaract Club extended its deepest gratitude to its sponsor, Tus-T Water, for providing refreshments to both the children and volunteers throughout the Super Readers Programme.
