Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves expressed deep satisfaction and national pride during the official arrival of key equipment at the Modernized Port, marking a major milestone in the country’s infrastructure transformation.
Speaking at the site, the Prime Minister highlighted the arrival of two critical pieces of machinery: a state-of-the-art container scanner valued at US$2.5 million, and a towering green crane priced at US$5.9 million. Together, these assets represent an investment of over US$8 million, part of the broader US$40 million port modernization package approved by Parliament.
“This is not just about equipment,” Gonsalves emphasized. “It’s about saving lives, securing our borders, and ensuring our port is equipped to detect threats like illegal firearms entering from abroad. We’ve invested in real tools to protect our people.”

The Prime Minister also addressed political criticisms surrounding the funding, likening opposition arguments to building a house without furnishing it. “You don’t build a port and leave it empty,” he said. “We must equip it to serve its purpose.”
Beyond infrastructure, Gonsalves praised the 277 employees of the Port Authority who have transitioned to the new facility. According to a Human Resources study, the move came with no loss of benefits, and in many cases, reclassification of roles, improved titles, and increased salaries. “This is a win for workers,” he noted, “and a testament to our commitment to fairness and progress.”
While acknowledging minor logistical delays due to damaged barges and weather-related setbacks, the Prime Minister confirmed that all systems are expected to be fully operational by October 25th.
