Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves has confirmed that Vincentian students studying in Jamaica are safe following the passage of Hurricane Melissa.
Speaking during the opening of his Unity Labour Party’s political rally, Gonsalves shared updates received from Ms. Niya Bennett of the Vincentian Students Association in Jamaica, noting that while the storm caused significant damage, no personal harm has been reported among students or nationals from Saint Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG).
“The worst has passed,” Bennett advised, “and we thank Almighty God for his many blessings.”

Prime Minister Gonsalves also announced that he had personally shared the contact details of the SVG student leaders with Prime Minister Andrew Holness, who has stored them in his personal phone and pledged to remain in contact with the students.
In a show of regional solidarity, SVG has already dispatched linesmen to assist Jamaica’s recovery efforts. Prime Minister Holness extended his thanks to SVG for the swift support and reaffirmed his commitment to safeguarding Vincentian Nationals during the post-hurricane period.
The update was met with applause from rally attendees, many of whom have family or professional ties to Jamaica. As recovery operations continue, both governments and student associations remain engaged in monitoring and support.
