A man described as elderly, who was physically assaulted following a dispute over change, allegedly struck the bus conductor first before restraining him in a chokehold while wielding a weapon, the bus conductor alleges.

The incident, which has attracted widespread local attention, occurred at the Girls’ High School Bus Stop in Richmond Hill, Kingstown on November 5.

On his Instagram account, the conductor (whose name has been withheld) alleges that the man initially boarded the van to travel to Calliaqua, paying $2—a fare the conductor deemed insufficient. The approved fare from Kingstown to Calliaqua is $2.50.

On the return journey from Brighton to Kingstown, the man was observed waiting by the roadside in Calliaqua for a van. The conductor informed him that the van would stop either at the High School Bus Stop or Peace Memorial Hall Bus Stop, the furthest point.

The conductor alleges that upon reaching the High School Bus Stop, the man gave him $20, and the conductor returned change of $17.50, thus correctly deducting the $2.50 fare.

An argument ensued, with the passenger allegedly insisting that his change should be $18.00, implying only $2.00 should be deducted from the $20, to leave him with three dollars in coins instead of $2.50 plus fifteen dollars in paper notes.

The conductor states that when he attempted to walk away, the disgruntled passenger struck him over the disputed 50 cent difference.

The situation escalated to the point where the conductor was on the ground in a chokehold-like position, with the passenger standing above him wielding a weapon.

Others intervened to assist the conductor, resulting in the passenger being beaten.

One News SVG has been informed that the matter is currently under police investigation.
