Doctors and nurses across St. Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) are currently participating in a five-day workshop at the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital, focused on diabetic foot care and prevention.

The workshop, which is being conducted by a renowned podiatrist from Toronto, Canada, Greg Lawrence, aims to equip local doctors and nurses with essential skills to identify, manage, and prevent complications associated with diabetic foot conditions.

The workshop emphasizes early detection and preventative care, helping medical professionals recognise high-risk patients before serious issues such as infections or amputations arise. According to Dr. Lawrence, “We’re focusing on prevention first. Once amputation happens, that’s it. Our goal is to catch problems early and take proactive steps to protect patients’ health and mobility.”

The sessions feature both theoretical instruction and hands-on demonstrations on proper assessment and treatment techniques for diabetic patients.

Dr. Lawrence, who has over seven years of experience specialising in diabetic foot care, highlighted the importance of collaborative healthcare education. “By strengthening local knowledge and skills, we can greatly reduce the number of preventable amputations linked to diabetes,” Dr. Lawrence added.

The initiative forms part of ongoing efforts to enhance diabetes management across St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
