At a mega meeting in Georgetown, Unity Labour Party (ULP) candidate for North Windward, Dr. Grace Walters, issued a strong warning to voters about alleged attempts by the opposition to bribe supporters during the ongoing election campaign.

In her address, Dr. Walters accused opposition members of “walking about with money” to sway voters away from the ULP.

Bribery during elections is a serious offense under the Representation of the People Act of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. The Act defines bribery as offering money, gifts, or any valuable consideration to influence a voter’s choice. Convictions can result in fines, imprisonment, and disqualification from voting or holding office.

The law makes clear that direct or indirect offers of money or gifts to voters are illegal, candidates or agents found guilty of bribery can lose their seat and face criminal penalties and even promises of future benefits in exchange for votes are considered bribery.

The Electoral Office of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, through its Code of Ethical Political Conduct, reinforces these principles. It calls on all parties to uphold fairness, transparency, and respect for voters’ dignity, avoid intimidation, bribery, or inducements of any kind, and conduct campaigns based on policies and performance, not personal gain.

The Electoral Office emphasizes that elections must be free from corruption, and voters should report any suspicious activity to authorities.
