The 2025 general election in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines marked a historic turning point. After more than two decades of Unity Labour Party (ULP) leadership under Dr. Ralph Gonsalves, the New Democratic Party (NDP), led by Dr. Godwin Friday, has won the mandate to govern. This seismic shift offers both hope and challenges for the island nation as it embarks on a new chapter.
While the election results signal public desire for change, the question remains: Is the NDP ready to govern effectively?
Dr. Godwin Friday’s seasoned leadership is undoubtedly the party’s strongest asset. With over 20 years as a Member of Parliament and a respected legal background, he brings crucial experience and stability to a government that will face complex economic and social challenges. His steady hand will be essential in guiding a cabinet that includes many newcomers to political office.
This influx of fresh faces presents both opportunity and risk. On one hand, new leaders often bring innovative ideas and renewed energy, qualities sorely needed to address pressing national issues such as economic diversification, climate resilience, and social development.

On the other hand, it’s important to recognize that while many NDP members have served in opposition for 25 years, the transition from opposition to governing presents a different set of demands. Experience in opposition does provide familiarity with parliamentary procedures and national issues, yet managing government affairs requires additional skills; overseeing public administration, implementing policies, and effectively coordinating state resources.
It is no secret that governing demands more than enthusiasm; it requires a firm grasp of bureaucracy, strategic planning, and effective communication with the public. The ULP’s long tenure allowed it to build institutional knowledge and policy expertise. The NDP now faces the formidable task of quickly transforming campaign promises into actionable programs while managing day-to-day governance.
Voters who entrusted the NDP with power expect competence, transparency, and tangible results. For Dr. Friday and his team, this means investing in capacity-building within government ministries, seeking expert advice, and fostering a culture of accountability. It also means engaging meaningfully with citizens to rebuild trust and demonstrate that change is not just political rhetoric but real progress.
Critics may point to the NDP’s lack of a clearly articulated innovative agenda during the campaign. Moving forward, it is imperative that the new government crafts and communicates a compelling vision that distinguishes it from its predecessor, not only in words but through policy outcomes that improve lives.
The New Democratic Party’s victory comes as a hopeful signal for Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, reflecting voters’ appetite for renewal. Yet, winning elections is only the first step. The true test lies in governing well. With Dr. Godwin Friday’s leadership complemented by a commitment to learning, innovation, and public service, the NDP is expected to rise to the challenge and chart a promising future for the nation. The people of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines deserve nothing less.
