Government Senators Chelsea Alexander and Jemalie John.

When the new Executive Government was sworn in on 2 December, two individuals who would serve as government senators were announced.

They were Chieftain Neptune, who unsuccessfully contested the North Central Windward constituency in the 27 November general election, and Lavern King, the Public Relations Officer of the New Democratic Party (NDP).

Since then, speculation surrounded the identities of the other two government senators, as the Constitution allows the government side of the House of Assembly to appoint four senators—two of whom may serve as ministers and two others in non-ministerial roles.

Today, during the swearing-in of the legislative branch of government, it was revealed that attorneys Chelsea Alexander and Jemalie John are the other two government senators.

Mr John was also sworn in as Deputy Speaker of the House.

Government senators may vote on bills and participate in debates; however, they are not permitted to vote on matters that involve changing or amending the Constitution.

The two opposition senators are Keisal Peters and Carlos James. However, both senators, along with Opposition Leader Dr Ralph Gonsalves, were absent from today’s ceremonial opening of the Twelfth Parliament.

Dr Gonsalves cited security concerns for his absence, while stating that Keisal Peters was overseas as her mother underwent surgery.
