Minister of National Security Hon. St. Clair Leacock, accompanied by Commissioner of Police Enville Williams and area representative Hon. Conroy Huggins, continued his tour of police stations with a visit to the historic Barrouallie Police Station in Central Leeward.

Leacock underscored the importance of ensuring that police officers are housed and accommodated in conditions that support their demanding duties.

“Policemen must not be in living quarters that are worse than their home situations. When they are at their workplaces, they must be sufficiently commodious and comfortable so they can deliver high-quality service,” he stated.

The Minister explained that the Barrouallie station had been abandoned due to environmental and infrastructural challenges, including sewage system backups during high tide. He emphasized that the government is weighing financial and technical options to modernize the facility while preserving its historic significance. Plans under consideration include integrated services with fire and coast guard units, upgraded quarters, and improved customer service for the public.

Area representative Minister Conroy Huggins echoed the Minister’s concerns, recalling his own early advocacy for improved police facilities. He noted that citizen security and the welfare of officers remain paramount for the administration.

“The conditions of these police stations are not fit for purpose. Officers cannot leave their homes and be in an environment far worse than where they live,” Huggins said.

Both officials pledged to take the findings back to Cabinet and the Prime Minister, stressing that improved police infrastructure across St. Vincent and the Grenadines is essential for strengthening community safety and supporting economic activity.
